21/2 year old son's speech disorder

My son was diagnosed with verbal dispraxia at age 21/2 and began intensive therapy first with the early intervention team in our area, then at a special preschool run by our school district and with a private therapist(approximately 3 45 minute sessions a week). He was first diagnosed by a private therapist. His main symptoms seemed to be mixing up letter sounds constantly and not having any consistency. He is now 5 1/2 and doing beautifully. His speech is almost always inteligible and his therapist is hoping that he will be able to finish therapy completely by second grade. My advice to you is to get as much therapy as possible (the early intervention and school district preschool program didn't cost us a penny) and consistently help your child at home with exposure to correctly modeled language and practice (ask your therapist for things to work on at home). Our therapist believes that the home factor is an incredibly huge part of the success. I felt very discouraged when my son was first diagnosed, but hang in there. Hopefully you will experience as much success as we have!
