Paula, i had to have a tonsillectomy at age 30something as i was always getting strep infections and tonsilitis. i was in total panic about going under a general anestetic, so i chose to have them removed with only local....meaning numbing the area by needle. the doc warned me it would test my gag reflex and boy, did i gag. but i do not regret having them removed this way and i have never had any problems since. occasional sore throats preceeding a cold, yes, but not strep or tonsilitius. that was really bad! if i were you i'd have them removed...good luck, liz
