Because we are all different, I can't tell you what is right for you, but as someone who has struggled with the ups and downs of this imbalance for years I can tell you what has helped me. First, you ARE normal! You are not the chemical imbalance labeled manic-depression. You are not your illness and you are not a lesser being because you have this imbalance or because there are still many uneducated or fearful people who may think that you are. Once I learned to believe this, I started to believe in myself more and that has helped immensely. Second, find one good doctor whom you trust and feel comfortable with and stick with him or her. Trust their expertise and your instincts and don't be afraid to share concerns or ask questions. Also don't expect any pill to "cure" all your problems. Medications may help to balance our brain chemistry, but we still need to take responsibility for our lives and happiness (which we have a right to, by the way!) Don't stop medication or change dosages without talking to your doctor first. Changing doctors and not complying with treatment plans are a good way to stay sick in my opinion ( somewhat based on experience). Take care of yourself, you ARE worth it. For me, my spiritual beliefs, a good therapist, some close friends, volunteer work to take my mind off myself, a grateful attitude for what I have and exercise and lots of water have also helped. I care about myself enough now to never again let this imbalance affect my life in a negative way. And you can too! Signed, Someone who understands
