I have had irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS for 10 years and the only thing that helps relieve the painful episodes is to use a heating pad. The time I find most convenient for me is just before I get up out of bed in the morning. The heat seems to relax the bowel and allow the stool to pass through. IBS can be either diarrhea or constipation, which is my problem. The intestine is made of 3 muscles each with a different purpose. The colon also removes fluids which causes the problem for me. For some reason, these three muscles get out of sync and have spasms in one place, keeping the stool too long and drying it out too much into hard pebbly difficult to pass stools. Also an 90+ lady told me to drink a glass of warm water right when you get up in the morning to help with constipation.
