Hashimoto's Disease

Amy Adams

Message 3 of 18 Previous Next

I was diagnosed with Hashimoto's four months after my first child was born in 1998. My hair was falling out in clumps, my skin was really dry, and I was tired all the time. I slept all the time and never felt rested. It felt as if I would drop the baby because my arms were so weak. I chalked the fatigue up to having a new baby, but went in for a physical. When I took my first Synthroid pill in the morning that first day, by the afternnon I felt like if I took a nap, I MIGHT actually feel rested. The bone deep fatigue eased up dramatically. I am on a very low dose (.05 mg) too and that is just fine. However, I find that if I miss a dose, I am sensitive to that and will feel strange by the afternoon. That reminds me to take my pill. I don't feel like my metabolisim has ever quite returned to it's "normal" level--nothing to really lay a finger on, but not as much energy as I was used to having. My sex drive is down dramatically too. All of my TSH levels still test within the normal range. I have a six month old baby born in 2000. I went through the entire pregnancy euthyroid, and the baby is fine. I did some research on pregnancy and hypothyroiditis, and it is much better to be hypo than hyper when pregnant. I was diagnosed at age 35. I had a had a miscarriage and problems becoming pregnant initially. The second time around it was very quick getting pregnant. Your thyroid levels need to be checked frequently during pregnancy. I was initially very angry about my condition, but with more information I have come to the realization that it could have been much worse. You need to be on the lookout for symptoms of diabetes, which occurs at a higher rate among people with thyroid disease.
