I had surgery done one year and 14 days ago at the age of 28. My curvature was 87 degrees prior to surgery. I was unaware that anything could be done when I was younger. When the scoliosis checks were done in early adolescence, they just said I had terrible posture. Your son should definitely have the surgery. When I think of all the grief and lack of self-confidence I experienced for many years because of having a hunchback, I really wish I could have done something years ago. Your son has the chance at a new life. He should take it. Getting a third opinion is not a bad idea.
