Young father's dementia

You do not make it clear as to whether your father has Alzheimer's or dementia due to hardeneing of the arteries, etc. There are nursing homes which specialize in patients with dementia, but I think even the best leave a lot to be desired. President Clinton has proposed changes to Medicare which would assist families in receiving assistance which would permit the patients to be managed at home for longer periods of time. If he has dementia, someone in the family should be appointed his legal guardian to care for his affairs, for if the court appoints an attorney, etc., they end up with more of the person's money than the person does. There are day care programs in many parts of the country which provide care on a basis much like daycare for children. Respite care can sometimes be found to relieve the caregivers at times. If your father has access to a long-term care policy, utilize it. The companies will work with the family to provide appropriate care. The Alzheimer Foundation or Association could probably be of valuable assistance as well. They have support groups around the country where individuals can get some valuable advice and support. Good Luck
