Hi, I hope you're not confusing SSI and SSDI!!! SSI is part of the welfare system. SSDI means Social Security Disability Insurance. That is what you should be collecting. If you read the newspapers, you will see that many people have trouble getting approved for SSDI. But, with certain illnesses/diseases, you should be approved with only a short wait. Go to the nearest Social Security office and get an appointment, and make sure you have all your paperwork with you. It is much better if you have proof of WHEN your illnesses MADE YOU disabled. If you can prove it (with doctors' notes), your SSDI checks will be made retroactive to the day you BECAME disabled. If you continue to have trouble, HIRE A LAWYER. In the Boston area they have lawyers who specialize in getting you onto SSDI. But, there are also "legal aid society" offices which help you get on SSDI. Make it a priority to do everything possible to get approved. I think some lawyers only charge you a fee IF they get you approved.
