When first diagnosed with PMR, I resisted prednisone, like you are! Mistake! Without treatment PMR can lead to Giant Cell Arteritis which has very bad effects. When the tell-tale headache began, I welcomed the prednisone. Still, I didn't stay on even a low dose long enough . . . and the PMR returned with a vengeance. Now, I welcome prednisone, have lost 15 pounds so far while on it, have had my bone density tests remain level, etc. Instead, I am grateful that there is a drug that brings relief! And, no, no alternative drug will do the trick, although I think that a good diet, lots of exercise is important to your general well being. Believe me, there are worse diseases to have. I embrace mine and am thankful that it is under control. And, yes, I will stay on the low dosage as long as necessary this time.
