I use Methotrexate and Prednisone for Mixed Connective Tissue Disease and Polymyositis, inflammation of the muscles. Even though MTX appears to have serious side effects, my Rheumatologist told me blood tests done regularily can monitor the possible permanent damage done by this drug(affects about 15% of patients). Prednisone, on the other hand does not have any type of diagnostic blood tests for Prednisone problems. Prednisone caused me to have 2 broken ribs(brittle bones), high blood pressure, and gall bladder disease within a few months. Then, I have the swelling and weight gain to deal with. If you look at some other anti-inflammatory drugs, their side effects are just as dangerous, or more so than MTX. MTX has been in use for about 30 years and many studies have been done on how it affects patients. New drugs known as "smart bombs"-Enbrel and Remicade can be accepted by the body better. Studies to provide concrete evidence aren't available yet. Unfortunately all drugs in this category suppresses the overactive immune system that is damaging our bodies.
