The vast majority of abnormal Pap smears have only a minor change which requires vigilant Pap smear follow-up. The whole premise of the screening test is to find abnormalities while they are still relatively insignificant and can be treated easily without much pain or trauma. Don't be overly concerned. Many of these abnormalities are caused by the low-risk varieties of the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) and will go away on their own. Even if the abnormality is significant, the treatment may be a cone biopsy of the cervix or a hysterectomy--neither of which is life-threatening. The important thing is that you go back for follow-up with your provider.
