I had a two level anterior fusion done on my neck in 1980. Bone was taken from my hip for the fusion. Shortly thereafter they began using donated bone plugs. Althought the initial spasm in the neck were bad, my hip hurt worse. I have done extremely well, since then by being careful not to lift heavy objects, and changing jobs where I didn't have to work over head. Some people have more problems, but I guess I was lucky and although I still have some nerve deficit in my right hand, I'm typing this aren't I? Positive attitude, second opinions, and a surgeon with a lot of experience in this type of surgery are important. But, the best surgeon is one referred to you by someone who has been to that doctor, especially if that person is a nurse. Best of luck to you!
