I have had hyper and hypo thyroidism. At 16 I was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism. They test your blood. I took lots of medicine and was helped much. By age 22 the hyperthyroidism was so out of control - medication no longer worked well. My options were surgical removal of some of the gland or radioactive isotopes which chemically destroy the thyroid tissue. I opted for the isotopes since that is non-invasive (NO SURGERY!!!) the chances for a good result were about equal with the isotopes offering no surgery. I had 2 years of no medication and then had to start taking a replacement hormone (pill) once each day. I have adjusted dosages to the max about 10 years ago. I am currently 46 years old, have lived with the condition for 30 years. You owe it to yourself to discuss this with your doctor. The test is called a T4, although they may do other additional testing. It is a simple matter of drawing blood at a lab and waiting for the results. Regardless - you will know whether or not a vital hormone to your body is over-or-under productive or normal. Isn't it better to know?? Then you can do something about it and get on with living your life worry-free! Good luck - write back if you want. Mary
