Lora, My son was born w/ cmv and is now 9 mos old. I must have gotten it while I was pregnant (most of the time the symptoms are not severe). Because I had a developing fetus, it settled in his brain. He is doing very well but it could be much worse. Because of the virus, he has a mild hearing loss in both ears and was just diagnosed w/ mild cerebral palsy. Anyway, he is currently on cytovene (which is ganciclivir) What I do know about it is that it is an antiviral drug that was formulated to directly attack the cmv virus. When you are born with it, the virus can do further damage throughout childhood. My son is on it so that this hopefully won't happen. I can say that since he has been on it he is not testing positive for the virus so it is doing its job. I hope it works for you. Good Luck.
