The plugs go into your tear ducts which are the tiny holes on the top and bottom of your lids, closest to the bridge of your nose. This is where tears drain OUT, not where tears come from. By plugging these, the little tears you have won't leave your eyes as quickly. Also, your eyes are drier at night because tears are secreted only when you blink, therefore at night, no tears are produced. I suffer from this too. I keep single-use eye drops under my pillow and use them whever I wake up during the night because I can't stand the dry feeling of my lids dragging across my eyes.
