My son was first diagnosed eight months ago with moderate to severe autism by a developmental pediatrician and now has been diagnosed with aspergers by a neurologist. They of course are on the same spectrom of disorders. My son Joseph has some speach, actually alot, but complete sentences are hard for him.Most of his difficulties are in social issues. We find he tries hard to communicate with adults but cannot bare to be around other children. Maybe because they are loud and loud things do bother him. Which must be difficult because he has two older sister who are very loud. We have made great strides through his speach, OT, sensory intergration , and physical therapist. Schools have been a complete disaster. I have found that the teachers treat them as behavoral problems and not children with sensory and social problems. It has been very sad, because I believe he truly wants to learn and it is evident in his therapy and the work I do at home with him. He has had genetic testing done, but everything seems normal. But you know the scientist do not really know what they are looking for. It could include up to 20 different genes. I do support the can foundation who funds genetic studies but my eyes are wide open to the neuro- immune dysfunction theories. I am currently trying to find doctors that will follow Dr. Goldbergs protocal on the issue. I think his web site is at Neuroimmun.com. If not, search Neuro immune and Dr. Goldberg. I have not given great consideration to secretin as of yet. Not willing to take the risk with my sons life. But maybe one day. My biggest problems are finding a decent teacher and school and a dentist that will work with him. He hates people touching him that he does not know much less drilling in his mouth. His doctors think under sedation is the way to go, but have yet provided me with the name of one that will do it. So my search continues.
