Hi Mary, my story is very similar to yours. The docs wanted to blame my disabling pain on disc problems too. I was finally diagnosed with chronic trochanteric bursitis and piriformis syndrome. My pain is in the left hip and buttock -- and it is excruciating! I had 2 docs tell me piriformis syndrome did not exist. I was finally diagnosed but all I have is a diagnosis -- no cure. I've noticed my hip now makes a loud popping sound when I move the leg a certain way and the foot turns out more than the other when I walk. Do you have this?? I've been able to get some pain relief by using a TENS unit that I bought on my own. It has allowed me to cut down a bit on all the powerful pain pills.I've had this condition for over a year and am now 56.
