I have had 2 back surgeries. I was told that I could never become a nurse after that. Well, I have been an RN for the past 7 years! I still experience pain, but I have learned to cope with it. It is usually lifelong even after surgery, just not as bad. I did not have a fusion. It was a suggestion, but I didn't have it. My surgery was at L4,L5. When I get a really good back ache (including sciatica)I take an antiinflamitory (aspirin, etc) and either place a moist heating pad on my back or cool pak. This helps me cope. Since I am also diabetic with diabetic neuropathy in my feet, I can tell you I know about pain. Don't be afraid of this surgery. I do reccommend prayer. Not only to give you peace of mind, but to have the only real help available. Good luck!
