The new engineered wood floors can also make you ill. These are made with wood chips and glue. I had these floors installed in my home and became very ill. Someone told me about a lab in Florida that tests for formaldehyde. I had this done and the results showed a reading of 1.65. EPA recommended safe level is .1. I am chemical sensitive so this was extremely high for me but would not be safe for anyone. When I asked the installer how he could put down something that was so dangerous, he informed me that that particular floor was their most popular. I would advise anyone with new flooring having health problems to have it tested. The test cost $31 and involved leaving a monitor in the room for 24 hrs. and returning it to the lab for testing. They will fax or mail the results. I also had them test a piece of flooring before having the new floor installed. The first floor had to be removed and now I have to pay again to have the new floor installed. There should be something that could be done to prevent the use of these extremely toxic floors, but first people will have to demand safe products.
