Hello, I have worked as a veternary assistant at the humane society for a year and a half. While there, many reasons that older people give for why they are giving their animals to us is that they are getting older and that the animal makes them too allergic. I am young myself and I burnt some eggs in my apartment and only after i washed my sheets+covers three times and shampoo washed my carpet was I able to breath out my nose again. I would suggest you got yourself a brand new hypoallergenic carpet, avoid using end dust or any other chemicals in your cleaning habits, and wash your pillow covers in a hot wash cycle. That old carpet is probably covered in something very unhealthy to your air supply and very hard to remove. Hope this helps.
