I am a 48 year old woman who has had Crohn’s Disease for 28 years; had resection surgery done in 1974 on area where small and large intestine join; and am now on Asacol to control intestinal inflammation, and Colestid to control bile salts diarrhea. My concern is my 7 year old grandson who has had a problem with “pooping” in his pants for about the last year. He doesn’t seem to have any control over it, and sometimes complains of abdominal discomfort/pain. My daughter has taken him to his pediatrician for this twice now, and he just tells her that his intestines are “packed”, and he just needs an enema. She gave him an enema, and it didn’t help. She had told the pediatrician that her son’s grandmother has Crohn’s, so we’re concerned that he may have some kind of intestinal problem such as Crohn’s because I know it can be hereditary. But the doctor said that it’s highly unlikely because “he” had never heard of children having Crohn’s. She tried to get a reference from this pediatrician to taker her son to a pediatric gastroenterologist, and he wouldn’t do it, he just said to make another appointment to bring him in again to see this same pediatrician. So my daughter called the office of the pediatric gastroenterologist to see if she could make an appointment without a reference from the pediatrician, and they wouldn’t do it. Does anyone out there have any experience with their children having this problem, or having been diagnosed with Crohn’s? Can you offer me any advice? Does this sound like it is something that should be treated by a gastroenterologist rather that just the pediatrician? I would appreciate any advice, comments, experiences you can give me - especially from a gastroenterologist who may read this. Thanks. -- Sandy
