Dyspraxia

Message 1 of 17 Next

My understanding of Dyspraxia is what I have read from the internet. I also speak from experience because I have a 4 year old boy that has been diagnosed with Dyspraxia. Dyspraxia is a immaturity of the brain resulting in messages not being properly transmitted to the body. Some problems caused by Dyspraxia: Speech problems, fine and gross motor delays, slow to learn how to dress, poor body awareness, sensitive to touch, may find clothes uncomfortable, poor short term memeory. And many more things. Not all of these will apply to every dyspraxic, and many of these problems will be overcome in time. Dyspraxics can be of average or above intelligence but are often behaviourlly immature. There is no cure for Dyspraxia but the earlier a child is treated then the greater the chance of improvement. Alot of the skills that "we" take for granted will never become automatic to a Dyspraxic child. They will have to be taught these skills. I would suggest to you to look up The Dyspraxia Foundation to get some more information. The School system or your primary care doctor should also be able to help. Being Dyspraxic means having a disability. Certain therapies depending on your childs needs can help tremendously. I hope I have been of some help to you. I know what you are going through. Feel free to write back.
