I was diagnosed last week with labyrinthitis, then visited my ear surgeon who also specializes in balance disorders. She recommended that I try Bonine, an over the counter motion sickness drug, and drink lots of fluids. This helped me greatly. She also wrote a prescription for Librium 5mg to be taken daily at bedtime instead of the Bonine if the Bonine made me too drowsy. She reports that labyrinthitis is usually a viral infection that must run its course, with mild symptoms remaining for up to 6 weeks. The other primary cause seems to be chronic middle ear problems. There was no mention of caffeine or salt restriction.
