Herniated Disk

Well, I'm an RN- and I too was recently diagnosed with a herniated disc. It was in my lumbar region (lower back). I've had a "bad" back for so many years that I just kind of put up with the back pain- that is until it started causing pain, numbness and tingling in my buttocks and legs. I went to a NEUROSURGEON who said I could try getting "steroid injections" in that affected spine area, and that it might help... but usually it only acts as a temporary fix. My other option was to have surgery- which I did on Dec. 19. It fixed my pain right away, though I am still sore from the incision. I also will be off from work for a total of 6-8 weeks. My herniated disc wasn't work related, but thankfully I have almost enough sick time to help me squeak by. I'm worried that this disc problem will limit my abilities on the job. The numbness you are experiencing is more than likely caused by the disc pressing on your nerves. I would recommend that you ask your primary dotor (depending on your health coverage) if you can see a NEUROSURGEON about this- instead of an orthopedic surgeon or a general surgeon since surgery that involves your nerves can be a little scary- and you want the best type of specialist working on you. If you can, also ask what type of "CONSERVATIVE TREATMENTS" can he consider, and if they might be a good choice for you. I've come across several sites by using "DISCECTOMY"as a keywork search on my computer and have found some good info regarding optional treatments and different methods of surgery- if needed. Also, how did you herniate your disc? If it was something that happened from work, make sure you let your boss know because they will be a responsible part of your treatment. And you may have to talk with your boss to see if there is something less physically demandng. It's tough to try and pick the best way to handle this- and I want you to know that I understand how you feel. I'm only 38 yrs. old- and this sure is a bummer. Don't give up. Good luck. Johnny O.
