Verbal Dyspraxia

Sue

Message 2 of 5 Previous Next

Cathryn I am a special needs nursery nurse working in a mainstream school with a seven year old child with verbal dyspraxia. I work very closely with a speech/language therapist following a programme. I have worked with him since he entered school{age5} and although it has been very slow progress he is reading individual words. we also rely on signs and symbols and he is now able to "read a simple book by signing once they have been taught. not only does the child and myself use signs but all his peers so that he can communicate out on the playground or when I am not there. I have been told that we may have to consider that he may never talk. [that's why we rely on signs and symbols]. He is a very lovable and happy child[always playing practicle jokes and I hope he stays this way for a very long time. There are difficulties within his learning-cannot put sentences together in written work but we are introducing a computer programme to assist him with this task. hope this helps sue
