febrile seizures

Lynn

Message 8 of 8 Previous

Both my boys had febrile seizures. They are now 17 and 12 years. The oldest probably had 1 or 2 seizures before we realized what was happening. (He was home with dad and was standing in a chair, fell out of the chair and Dad rushed him to ER--no one gave attention to the description of seizure--broken collar bone. The next time he was with MawMaw and fell hitting the back of his head.) Not until he was 3 and had a fever with both parents witnessing the seizure did anyone give us a name for it. The younger boy was probably less than 2 years--by then we knew what was happening. He had a seizure when he was being treated for an ear infection. When I took him to the doctor for his re-check, I almost forgot to mention the seizure! Both boys had sleep EEGs done at about 4 years old and both were normal. I remember the the episode of fever with the oldest when he QUIT having seizures. He was 6 years old. He turned pale gray. But no seizure! Both boys outgrew the febrile seizures. The doctors told us that it was the quick rise in temp--not necessarily the degree of temp causing the seizure. It's not easy to watch your child have one. I tended to blame myself for not giving medication to lower the temp. Don't waste your time on blame. It just happens. I remember just holding my children, feeling love for them, wishing it wouldn't happen and remember to count my blessings when they were back to normal, running, playing and getting into things. (This too shall pass). Best of luck.
