My husband developed an extremely swollen leg, red and very hard to the touch. Painful. He has Rheumatoid Arthritis and is taking a new drug called Embrel. His specialist said that the swelling was from the arthritis but had him stop taking the Embrel as it lowers your immune system. He put him on Cipro as an antibiotic. He had to go to his company's insurance Dr. as they didn't think it was as serious as his specialist said. When the Dr saw his leg he immediately said it was cellulitis and said he was worse than the specialist said. He was put on unpaid medical leave, sent to his family Dr. who told him to continue the antibiotic and to keep his foot elevated. That was 5 days ago and he still is having problems. Some of the swelling and redness has gone down in places but not all of it. His leg has been so swollen he could hardly get a pair of pants over it. He has been having blisters on his feet and they turn into sores so this is no doubt how he got cellulitis. This is a very dangerous condition as gange green can set in if not taken care of promptly. I never knew anything about this until I did some research over the Net. The Dr. was not very helpful in explaining the cause or the treatment.
