My Sister has been in the hospital for 2 weeks with necrotizing cellulitis on her right thigh. Oral antibiotics did not touch this. She is currently on an IV antibiotic Zosyn. She has had three surgeries to remove the necrotic tissue. The doctors have been very aggressive so far and take what appears to be healthy tissue each time, but it has been 4 days since her last surgery and tonight when checked had a new spot. Will probably go back in surgery tomorrow for more removal. The area that has been removed so far is probably 8 x 8 inches. This all started after my sister had a vein stripped from her leg, due to a blood clot. 5 - 6 days following the procedure she has severe redness and heat and A LOT ! of pain in her leg. She went back to the vascular surgeon who put her on oral antibiotics and sent her home. The next day she noticed some dark bruise like spots and went back to the Dr again. Another Dr tried to drain the area and sent her home again. The next morning the spots were black and she could not stand to put weight on her leg and she said the pain was intense, she was also vomiting. My sister decided not to go back to the Dr she had seen and instead went to the hospital where my mother was treated for an infection in 1995 inwhich she lost her right breast to necrotizing fasciitis. My sister is seeing the same surgeon and same infectious disease specialist that treated my mother. My advise to anyone who has anything which sounds like this is tell your Dr to be aggressive. This is something that has to be cut away. If anyone has any advise as to how my sisters infection might be stopped please let me know.
