Reflex sympathetic dystrophy etiology is not well understood. Sometimes, if it is treated in the earliest stages, the progression can be stopped and even reversed. There are some regional blocks which can be done much like spinals or epidurals to increase the blood flow to the area and relieve the vascular spasm. RSD can be set off by a light fabric touching the afflicted area, temperature changes, using the affected area, and by drafts which would explain the air conditioning.
