Croup

My son was diagnosed with croup March 5, 1999 and the next day he was put in the hospital for observation. The following day he was intubated and almost died before the doctors got in there. My daughter had the croup so many times during age 1-5 and I knew the routine take them in a steamy bathroom for 10-15 minutes and then to a cold freezer or cold outside for 10-15 minutes; well with my son I did this several times during the night but it never helped and I knew it was something worse, My son was finally diagnosed with bacterial tracheits. The Hib vaccine kids get was the cause; either when he got the vaccine- the vaccine itself wasn't any good or my son's body failed to produce the antibodies when he got the vaccine to help immune himself.. The point is--it is rare, he shouldn't have gotten it, it is usually fatal, and it your child gets croup and the normal treatment doesn't work after several attempts keep taking them to the doctor. And the steroid medication they give will make the child seem like he's better because it hypes them up and if x-rays are done--the x-rays show that its the croup but don't rely on that. I'm a nurse and I relied on the doctors too much and trusted what they said, when I should have trusted my motherly instinct. Sherri
