Peritonsillar abscess and Adult Tonsillectomy

Michelle

Message 6 of 13 Previous Next

I am 31 and I had a tonsillectomy 5 days ago. The surgery itself was no big deal and when I woke up, I felt fine except for the sore throat. Since then, the pain and discomfort has been horrible. I have had a couple of surgeries before and have gotten through the pain just fine. This surgery has brought me to my breaking point. I have had constant nausea from the pain medication (Percaset and then Vicadin) - I've since switched to extra strength tylenol and it's much better but I still have some nausea. Since I cant really wash my mouth out properly, vomitting is even more uncomfortable than it would usually be - so the nausea is really hard to deal with. I have a constant bad taste in my mouth which surely means I have terrible bad breath. I haven't been able to sleep for more than 3 to 4 hours at a time and every time I wake up, I'm in agony. I've been drinking fluids consantly but havn't been able to eat much at all - including ice cream. I've definitely lost about 7-10 pounds already and it has only been 5 days. This recovery has been so painful for me. If you're just thinking about this surgery - and it's not absolutely necessary, think long and hard before you decide. I was told I'd be back at work after 7-10 days. Right now, I can't even imagine that and I'm thinking I may need to extend my absence from work.
