tonsils

My teenage daughter had her tonsils and adnoids taken out this past summer. Reason being cronic sore throat (about once a month), bad breath all the time, her tonsil had what I call potholes and food would catch in them. Her adnoids were slightly enlarged and caused her to snore and not get a good nights rest, she was tired much of the day. So she had surgery. For 1 1/2 weeks she ate nothing but popcicles, ice cream is not a good idea because of the mucus it causes. She also didn't talk for same amount of time. Then she gradually ate broth and soups. She didn't feel good for about a month but that is because she had what the doctor called a scar band grow from her uvula to one side where tonsil was. It was caused because her uvula (the thing that hangs down in the back of your throat) was swollen to the size of her thumb and touched the area where one tonsil was taken out. It grew together and as the uvula's swelling went down it stretched a thin piece of skin called the scar band. Doctor just clipped it with scissors and she seemed to heal quickly then. My regret was that I waited for three weeks for post op appointment with surgeon, if I would of took her in sooner they would of seen the scarband and clipped it then and she would of recovered sooner and easier. She says the whole thing was very painful (she could not take any pain meds as makes her sick) so she went cold turkey and put up with pain. But she is very glad she went through with it, no more sore throats, bad breath or snoring!! Oh yes and drink lots of water! So expect pain, but hopefully you can take meds for that, don't freak if uvula swells and the color in back of throat will be blak, white plus colors from popcicles. My daughter says she would do it again if she had too because it is worth it!!! Hope I didn't scare you, just watch to see if a scar band developes which I think was a rare thing to happen anyway. Good luck and stock up on all kinds of popcicles!!
