hives

Hello, I have a Down syndrome son who recently had a severe allergic reaction to an antibiotic he had been taking for a sinus infection. His hives were huge and his groin area and under his arms were just totally red-the hives all joined together to make one big red area. We went to the E.R., by the time we got there, his breathing was short and labored. The gave him a shot to help stop the allergic reaction. They kept us there for 7 hours, he was also vomiting. When we left, they gave us a prescription for Hydroxyz, it was to help with the allergic reaction and hives. So the next day he got up, he had hives so bad on the bottom of his feet and behind his knees, he could hardly walk, we went to the Doctor, they added another medication to help with the allergic reaction, he was put on Zeratec. They said the first three days are the worst, after that he should start slowing down on break out of hives. Being put on another antihismine was the best thing for him, with in two days his hives were almost gone. They said to drink allot of fluids to flush it out of his system-we did that. They also told me you can break out in hives-(a small amount) up to three weeks. My sons skin became very dry once the hives were gone and his lips got little cracks on sores on them. He lost 7 pounds and was totally exhausted. Maybe you need a second med to help stop your reaction, I would call or see your doctor. Good Luck. Karen
