I also have high cholesterol. A total cholesterol above 240 puts you in the high risk zone. You're right that statin drugs don't prevent heart attacks - directly. What they do is lower your cholesterol so that your arteries stay open. High cholesterol will clog your arteries so that the blood cannot flow through them. This can lead to stroke or heart attack.
