polyneuropathy

I have polyneuropathy from vasculitis (part of an autoimmune disease). I've been given amytriptilene, which is a mild anti-depressant. It's not because I'm depressed, but because one side-effects of the drug is that it reduces nerve pain. If you're like me, you have the "boot" effect. Where you would have a boot touching your foot is where you have pain. I find that air blowing on my feet really aggravates them. We have window air conditioners and use box fans to circulate the cool air. I can't stand to feel any air brushing over my feet. I get the cold/hot sensation, like your feet are freezing and burning at the same time, all the while my feet are warm to the touch. Sometimes just covering my feet actually makes them feel better. I also find that having one of my sons or my husband massage my feet before bedtime really helps me sleep. Ask your doctor about taking a low dose tri-cyclic anti-depression medication for pain. It may be just what helps.
