I as of yet have not been diagnosed. But your symptoms are identical to mine and I also was put on prednisone with much success. My doctor was also concerned of the long term side effects of prednisone and has opted for treatment with an allergy medicine called Zyrtec. It has alleviated 95% of my symptoms and I only notice the itching and hives when I forget to take my once a day dose or if the symptoms exacerbate which is rare. All in all it has been a lifesaver and I can sleep through the night without scratching myself to death. I have noticed very little side effects if any from the Zyrtec and it does not interact with my other meds (Norvasc and HCTZ). Check with your doctor to see if Zyrtec may help you and as long as their are no contraindications to your other medicines, why not. Otherwise, all considered I am healthy and my doctor says as long as it works to alleviate my symptoms with minimal side effects, he's not going to be a stickler about giving my condition a name.
