Marilyn, I feel bad for you. I had tinnitus for over 5 years. Mine was because when I took Accutane, an acne treatment, my joints and muscles and feet became very achy and sore. My dermatologist recommended asprin and well, I took it in the recommended high doses... when I finished treatment, I had a terrible ringing in my ears. I went to the Dr.... he did a hearing test. I could hear fine. It was less worse when there was a background noise present. So I played the radio ever so lightly when I slept. Also, we had a water heater timer that sort of buzzed and made the tinnitus much worse. I made my husband disconnect it. Now, I cannot stand loud noises or noisy rooms for very long. I would just recommend avoiding pain relievers as much as possible, keep some kind of background noise going, get your hearing checked, avoid buzzing noises... it used to send me into a wild state. Also, toward the end of my tinnitus, I had read that you could be fitted with a hearing aid like device that made a more pleasant sound. Yes, if my tinnitus hadn't gone away, I would have opted for that. One day, my husband and I were sitting in the living room and I jumped up and said "omygawd!!" I scared him and he asked what that was about. "THERE'S NO BUZZING IN MY HEAD ANYMORE... I DON'T KNOW HOW LONG IT'S BEEN, BUT I JUST REALIZED IT." Yeah!!! Well, good luck. It'll probably go away.
