dyspraxia/apraxia in 2 year old

Your son needs to receive speech therapy through an early intervention program. He should also have an occupational therapy evaluation. Dyspraxia and apraxia have to do with the brain sending the body messages to do something. For example you may say to your child say "dada." He wants to say it but he can't. the message doesn't get there. His brain can't control the movements of his mouth. You may ask him to give you a block and the same thing may happen. However he may do some of these things spontaneously. Apraxia means his movements are totally impaired. Dyspraxia means he has some problems. Being your child can babble I'd say he's probably dyspraxic. Have you tried sign language, switches or using pictures to communicate? It may be awhile before he speaks and he needs other ways to communicate. Good luck Susan speech therapist
