for year i have been carrying the beta thalassemia minor trait and did not realize it until I was told the the son's doctor he has sickle beta thalassemia. I doubted it since I never heard of thalassemia and I was positively sure I did not have the sickle cell trait. it wasn't until i did extensive blood work that i realized that i have Beta thalassemia minor trait and my husband has the sickle cell trait (which we knew already). I have suffered for years of being tired, dizzy and light-headed. My son who is just five years old has been hospitalized four times within the past year. He had two blood transfusion and pnemonia two times. He catches cold very easily and his immune system seems to be very low. I have noticed, however, that when I stay home with him and monitor the amount of liquid he takes in (at least 8 cups) he never gets sick. In addition, he frequently complains for a pain in his spleen. His spleen is often enlarged and causes much discomfort for him. I have noticed that lately he has been complaining for a pain in his leg. It seems like not much physicians know much of Sickle beta thalassemia. I need some help. Does anyone know some home remedies that can build up his immune system? Has anyone ever remove a spleen? What are the side effects? I fear my son's spleen gets reptured while he is playing and he bleeds to death. Presently he has been prescribed Beconase, Flovent Singulair Claratin, folic acid and Pen V K (Pensillin). Most of these drugs are for asmea.
