severe back pain

Message 12 of 26 Previous Next

My heart goes out to you-for the past five months, I, too have had severe back pain due to two herniated discs on opposite sides on my lower back. I had an MRI which , when locally diagnosed, told me that I had spinal stenosis and needed surgery five minutes ago.I took my MRI to the University of Michigan hospital and saw a neurosurgeon who said that the discs would probably "right" themselves by going back into place; at least he has seen that in 75% of cases. I have been on medication for these past five months Darvocet, muscle relaxants, and naprosyn. When you mentioned the agony of coughing/sneezing, boy I heard what you said! Let me tell you what happened to me: I do not have spinal stenosis, swimming at a very easy pace has been a big help. Hot tub, not so much, but not bad. What worked for me was what I should have done five months ago: I went to my chiropractor (who only charges $20.00 per visit and does not do x-rays)and he felt the disc that was giving me so much anguish. I don't know how I manage to do this to my back either; I asked him and his advice was probably the best. He said we are all "creatures of Habit" and do things the same way all the time. I don't know how you feel about chiropracty (I said awful things about them in my life!)but that was where the real relief was to be found. Also-get a good lumbar pillow either from your local discount or pharmacy- I think they help. Whatever you decide to do, good luck. Know that someone has been there, too! Bye.
