Nutrition Guidelines for ADD

Message 7 of 7 Previous

Hi, I have a 27 year old daughter with ADD. I have done a lot of reading (20 some books). This is one awful thing to have. From my reading and expieience diet has very very little to do with it. A Dr. Finegold thought it did but even he got discouraged because it so seldom helped. It does help the odd boy who is very hyperactive. My daughter was only diagnosed 2 years ago near the end of college!!! Her type is called inattentive type. She was generally a quiet dreamy person but when she had had it watch out!! Temper big time!! Bonnie has tried all kinds of healthfood pills that taste like grass, she has tried flax seed, she has cut sweets out all to no avail. She also tried ritilin but it made her very nervous and raised her blood preassure a lot. She has memory problems, organizational problems etc etc. She is weak emotionally. She cannot sit and do office type work because she gets too drowsy. So life is tough. Raising her was hard because we did not know what was wrong. However she can be a very loving and compassionate person and is engaged to be married. He knows all about it and still wants her. This may all sound discouraging to you, please note every kid is different. Bonnie also tires easily. I would be happy to corespond with you and maybe we can encourage one another. If you want to try a diet it is basically no sugar, no red dyes, no chocolate, no cheese or pickes because of the preservation process. I have a slew of books. A good one with lots of detail is No easy answers (Dr. Lynn Weiss I think). I will look through my others and get back to you if you like.Basically my daughter now uses a daytimer book to help her stay organised and she sets two alarm clocks to make sure she gets up in time. She also trys to pace herself, although that is hard with a busy life. A basic routine for these kids is really helpful. One year at school the teacher made sure she took all her homework home and we signed a page that she had done it all (these kids should not have to be burdened with homework). You also have a right that your child can write tests in a quiet room(no door banging every time someone leaves). I really care about you and wish you all the best. Write anytime.
