Glucophage is not an oral hypoglycemic agent. (In essence, it does not assist the pancreatic beta cells to release stored insulin, as does an agent like glyburide), rather glucophage assists your body's cells in utilizing the existing insulin already being produced. It "unlocks" the barrier between the cell membrane and the bloodstream insulin, thereby allowing your tissue cells to more effectively utilize it.
