my almost 4-year old daughter had an outbreak of these long hives as you describe them. They moved over her entire body over the course of about 24 hours, but never appeared in the same spot twice. They itched her a lot. We gave her benadryl every 4 hours and cool baths. Her pediatrician explained it as the body's reaction to fighting a virus. It was quite frightening to me!
