I've had insomnia for nearly 30 years and feel terrible most of the time. What format does your friend's insomnia follow--there are different forms, such as inability to fall asleep at night; early awakening, during the night and failing to go back to sleep soon or ever; there's awakening just an hour or so before dawn; then there's alpha-delta sleep, in which you get no delta (deep) sleep, and you awaken feeling awful. I have three of these--all except sleep onset. I wrote an article about my sleep disorder; I'd love to send it to your friend. Even if it didn't help her sleep, it might be supportive, because I talk about what it feels like to lose sleep all the time.
