I just had the subarachnoid shunt surgery on this past Monday. I have had MM for a year and a half, and have tried most of the meds recommended, but to no avail. I was NOT at a peak of my symptoms, when I made the decision for surgery. I simply can not go on, not knowing "What if...". I have actually spoken with quite a few MMers who have had this surgery, and had it relieve their vertigo symptoms. The rate of effectiveness for this surgery is about 60 to 70%, in relieving vertigo. My doctor, here in Kansas City, wrote a research paper, which was published in the American Journal of Otology in March 1988. It is entitled "A Critical Comparison of Results of Endolymphatic Subarachnoid Shunt and Endolymphatic Sac Incision Operations". It was the deciding factor in my decision for the surgery. You are welcome to write me at LesnKC@yahoo.com .
