My husband is 55 years old and was diagnosed with an immature kidney at an early childhood age. At the age of 18 he was diagnosed with high blood pressure. For years they tried unsuccessfully to get the blood pressure under control. Until about 5 years ago they finally got it under control with a combination of Norvasc, Monopril and Cardura. Last year he was diagnosed with cancer in the left kidney which was the immature kidney. Upon seeing a nephrologist we found that the defective kidney was the cause of the high blood pressure. The left kidney was removed on Dec. 14, 1999 and sent to a local hospital in Miami Fl for research along with other tests. The findings was that he had two different types of kidney disease, one type in the right kidney and another type in the left kidney. This really puzzled the doctors. The two have not yet been detected as to exactly which diseases they are. He has been diagnosed with chronic proteinuria and the doctor says it can't be treated right now without further research due to the fact that the medication to be used breaks down the immune system. My husband also suffers from asthma and because of this and the cancer it is too big of a risk to use the medication. In the mean time the kidney disease will not allow his blood pressure to drop to a suitable level. I have done research on the 3 medications he is taking and they all say to be carefull taking them with kidney disease present. So in turn the high blood pressure continues to damage the remaining kidney which is down to 50% function and the kidney damage continues to elevate his blood pressure. Does anyone have any suggestions to stop this vicious cycle. He is presently on a very strict diet of practically no protien, no salt, and very low fat. any suggestions will be greatly appreciated.
