nystagmus

marianna

Message 2 of 9 Previous Next

My 8 almost 9 year old daughter has had congenital nystagmus since she was born. In 99% of the cases it happens to albinos but she is what they call a "fluke". She has been seen by specialists right from the start. The "flipping" has improved since she was born but she will never get rid of it. We have been told by the doctors that by the time she is a teen her body will have learned to try to control the condition to and extent and it could possibly even been unnoticeable to others. The only thing that can be done for them if need be is moving the focal point so the child does not have to turn sideways to focus straight ahead. This surgery is not necessary and is purely for cosmetic services depending on how bad the tilt is. Please try to be patient and understanding in this matter. Very little can be done and grandparents tend to think parents are neglecting the child by not having operations etc. done. This is nothing like weak muscles in the eyes that can be tightened. It's a connection in the brain that does not function properly or it has to do with pigmentation (albinos). Hope I've helped. Try to be supportive.
