We recently came to the conclusion that hypoglycemia is possibly inherited. My husband, daughter, sister-in-law, and brother all have it. My daughter has tried so many different foods to balance her blood sugar, and she finds that protein is by far the best way to keep it under control. Pasta and simple carbohydrates are the worse thing you can eat because they turn to sugar so quickly. Complex carbohydrates like beans, legumes, etc. are much better for you. She can't drink orange juice--it throws her in a tail spin, as well as most fruit. She hardly ever eats fruit because of the effect she gets from it. She has also discovered that taking vitamin C is very beneficial. She takes it everyday, but if she waits too long to eat & starts getting shaky and weak, she takes about 1000mg of Vit.C as she is eating a snack and it seems to level her out much more quickly. She was so happy to discover that because once she starts to "go under" it used to take hours, sometimes days, before she felt normal again. She also snacks every hour or two on a protein bar or almonds. My husband finds that eating protein when he first gets up in the morning keeps him from taking a dive. There have been times that he has walked into the house and just fell to his knees from weakness and couldn't have been able to get to food to level out his blood sugar. He eats cottage cheese, peanut butter on toast, or eggs (we don't eat meat). Also protein shakes help in the morning or during the day. Hope this is helpful to all of you who suffer from this disorder. I know how devestating it can be.
