I was diagnosed with Gilbert's disease a few years ago. I was told it was a minor condition. I understand this disease causes an elevated bilirubin count, that resembles hepatitis, for various reasons. Some of which are: fasting, during or after an illness, or being under a lot of stress. My primary care physician was alarmed at how high my billirubin counts were and was concerned about potential permanent brain damage. I also discovered I am missing at least one liver enzyme (the one that converts codeine to morphine). I was told by a doctor that this is another aspect of the Gilbert's disease. In addition, I require less medication than most people to get the desired effect. I would like to find out if the brain damage potential is for real and how serious it is. I would also like to know what tests I can ask for to find out the kinds of liver enzymes I am missing and what kinds of prescription medications will not work for me. thank you
