gilberts syndrome

My son was diagnosed with Gilbert's at the age of 16 after several terrible bouts of illness. The Gilbert's made him jaundiced whenever he was ill or even from a lack of sleep. The teenage years is typically when Gilbert's shows itself, but since you did not mention your age, I am assuming that you are at least in your early 20's, since you are obviously of drinking age. We were told by my son's doctor in no uncertain terms that drinking alcohol was not something he should ever do, as it would cause the Gilbert's to rear it's ugly head and make him feel terribly ill again. The doctor said that drinking alcohol, no matter how little he drank, would not be beneficial to controlling the Gilbert's. On the contrary, he gave us a list of things to stay away from and alcohol was at the top of the list! My son heads off to college this week; he has never touched alcohol and knows that he cannot go to fraternity parties and the like and drink... period. I am amazed that your doctor never told you this, but that certainly would explain why you feel ill the next day, even after only a pint! Regarding your food cravings the day after drinking... it sounds like you've got a typical case of "the munchies". After drinking alcohol or smoking substances, that's what people do! Regarding the eggs, chocolate and wine... yes, they can absolutely bring on migraines, and are all well-known migraine triggers. This is another important detail your doctor should have mentioned to you. Your doctor should provide you with a list of migraine trigger foods. Coincidentally, my son also suffers from migraines which started about the same time as his Gilbert's. I had never connected the two before now, but I'm curious if your migraines also started at the same time as your Gilbert's? Try to cut out the alcohol completely - this means no red wine with dinner, and no pints at the pub - and see if you don't feel worlds better. And just a thought... you may want to think about looking for a different doctor! Best of luck to you!
